Climate and Disaster Risk Reduction

Add a warm message to welcome visitors

Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) refers to the systematic efforts and actions aimed at reducing the impact of disasters on individuals, communities, and the environment. DRR involves understanding and managing the underlying factors that increase vulnerability to disasters, preparing for possible hazards, and responding effectively to reduce their effects when they occur.

2023 recorded 399 natural disasters that resulted in 86,473 fatalities and affected 93.1 million people. The economic losses amounted to 202.7 billion USD. With a global urban population that will reach 3.4 billion people by 2050, Asian cities remain vulnerable to natural disasters intensified by climate change.

Cities are on the front lines of climate change, as major contributors to global emissions and as places particularly vulnerable to its impacts. Addressing climate change in cities requires comprehensive, multi-faceted approaches that combine resilience, mitigation, and adaptation strategies. Most importantly, climate action in cities must also be inclusive, ensuring that all residents (especially those most vulnerable), benefit from more sustainable and equitable urban environments.

AIT RRC.AP Climate Change works closely with partners to provide tools and strategies for cities and local governments to address risk assessment, risk prevention and mitigation, preparedness and planning, response and recovery, disaster preparedness and early warning systems. AIT RRC.AP is also a member of Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR 2030) where over 1700 cities have joined supporting over half a billion populations collectively. We have our flagship annual regional training workshop together with our partners for supporting cities MCR 2030. We help cities and local governments to develop roadmaps and national and local resilience plans, embedding climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction into their broader development strategies of strengthening resilience against climate and disaster related risks.
